Cheap Liverpool guesthouse review
Ok so its about time i had another post here as im sure there are still lots of people looking for great deals for accommodation in Liverpool. I thought i would do another review here of a cheap local place to stay in next time you are in the city. For the review im choosing somewhere i actually stayed in a few months ago when i was over to watch Liverpool VS Lyon in the champion’s league. It was a pretty busy time as alot of people where over for the match as the champions league always brings out a good crowd. Please don’t mention the result as im sure you don’t want to add insult to injury!
Now i have to start by saying i did not stay in a hotel! Now all of you guys who are only looking for cheap hotels in Liverpool do not need to click away as i think this review will be relevant to everyone weather you initially decided on a specific hotel or not. The place i stayed was called Holme Leigh Guest House and it is situated in the Smithdown road area of south Liverpool. I have to be honest that the main reason me and my friends booked this place was the price as it was only £50 for a twin room sharing which i did think was great value for anyone who is on a budget (and me and my friends definitely were!). I actually got a room to myself as my friends had already booked earlier and they had no double rooms left. So my single room was £60 which i think was still ok.
My room was actually quite big to my surprise and i the bathroom was also alot bigger than i would usually expect. Also i have to mention at this time that we where only there for one night so the level of comfort required didn’t need to be out of this world. My friend’s room was actually smaller than mine which was surprising given that it was a double. Also they did not have a bathroom as they did not book an en-suite. This meant trips to the shared showers and toilet which they often decided not to avail of when they could gatecrash my room. The guesthouse also had a reasonable sized breakfast area but i can’t really review this due to the hangover the next day. I would have had neither the stomach nor the motivation to get out of bed between 7 and 8:30 to test it out. I have no idea why many hotels but particularly guesthouses only serve breakfast this early. I have a feeling it is to get away with serving as little people as possible (call me sceptical).
I must confess im not overly familiar with this area of Liverpool and i would not stay it would be a hotspot on your average tourist map. However at the same time it seemed nice enough and the kind of sleepy residential area that you forget about pretty quickly. One of the main things i suppose you are wondering is how much it cost to get back into the city centre by taxi to and from the guesthouse? Well it wasn’t actually that expensive coming in at around £7 a go. Given that we only made this trip a few times a day and that there was 3 of us it wasn’t that expensive at all. Given the extra cost that a hotel right in the centre of Liverpool would have cost us i think it was a good decision to go with this cheaper style of accommodation.
So there you have it my friends, a new post to start the new year in style! Hopefully this will have given you a few more things to think about next time you are booking your trip as there are some real cost savings out there if you are prepared to look around. Stay tuned for some more reviews and news for Liverpool coming soon!
Cheap accommodation review : Sir Thomas Hotel
Its not often we talk about cheap hotels here that are as close to the city centre as the Sir Thomas Hotel in Liverpool city. Its actually only about half a mile from the main amenities which is really good and whats better it is only about £40 per night for a standard twin room which i think represents good value in a budget hotel. This hotel is three star but as i am seeing more and more the standard of your average 3 star hotel has greatly increased over the years. The finish on the rooms and particularly the Bar and restaurant is excellent, it really does come close to several more expensive hotels that ive seen in the city (im not naming names
)
Only real downside is the car parking but this is something your gonna find with any cheap city centre accommodation. They do provide car parking at the local NCP park but you will have to pay around £12 a day which isnt too bad i suppose. Again the main thing to keep in mind with this hotel is the location as you are going to be able to walk to many of the main attractions and tours straight away as it is located right on Thomas street and so you can save on some expensive taxi fees.
Why go cheap when most pay more?
Its an interesting question buy why should you go for a cheap hotel when the majority of people are lookng to splash out when they go on holiday. Well the simple answer has to be that you can often get the exact same or even better facilities in a cheap hotel if you are willing to compromise on just a few small details, eg location. What people don’t think about is that hotels are often exploiting peoples ignorance about the local accommodation market and charging excessive prices based on this.
Weather you are looking for cheap hotels in Liverpool or a cheap deal somewhere else the key to any good deal is to look around as much as possible in the area you want to stay in and look at different options. For example try different room combinations to see if the final price gets any cheaper. Its also worth noting that hotels find it difficult to sell very large rooms so you may want to explore sharing with your group as opposed to smaller separate rooms.
Factors envolved in booking a cheap hotel
The first thing to think about is that what type of hotel you need and then build your trip around that. Many people are often booking hotels that are way out of their price range and usually based solely on the star rating. However what most people don’t realise is that the star rating is only based on the number of amenities the hotel has and not the quality of them. Quite often you will be paying for facilities which are not what they say they are or you would never want to use. For example some luxury hotels will build a swimming pool just to bump up the rating however it will often be very small and/or poor quality as they built it only for this reason. This is why examining the finer details of any hotel is very important.
Location also has to be a factor when thinking about a cheap hotel anywhere. The closer you are to the city centre in Liverpool you are the more you are going to pay. Since taxis and busses are still quite cheap it may be worth booking a hotel further out from the city and then commuting in on a daily basis. For some this is too much of a chore however when many people realise that they are paying double the price just to be close to the city centre. This is especially true when you compare some of the facilities of hotels in the centre or Liverpool to those on the outskirts which will often have better facilities than those with a central location. So with this in mind its worth looking at how much you will spend to get into the city centre and if it is less that booking a cheap hotel in Liverpool city centre.
All inclusive board has now become a favourite option for many people who want to budget their trip more effectively and try to plan ahead. Full board will mean you get three meals a day every day for you whole stay. However while this may not seem like the great money saving option it appears to be. It will work if you are going to be close by the hotel at all times however if you are away sight seeing are you really going to travel back to the hotel for food? Remember if you pay full board and end up eating out you are wasting alot of money. Half board for most is a much better and more realistic option in my opinion.
Planning your budget ahead of time has to be the most important factor of a cheap hotel stay so its worth looking at how much various attractions are going to cost ahead of time. You may also be able to get some great savings and discounts by pre-booking local attractions. You may also be able to get discount coupons from travel magazines or even you hotel in advance. Hotels can often offer discounts to their guests when they have contracts setup with local attractions.
Giant spider comes to Liverpool
People could hardly belive their eyes as a giant spider appears on the streets. See for yourself below!
Why come to Liverpool
Liverpool is a lively city based on the western coast of England reaching out onto the Irish sea. It has a rich history and culture and has proved this by becoming European capital of culture 2008. Some of Liverpools most famous residents are the rock/pop super group the Beatles who formed in the 60s and went on to worldwide fame. Tourists still visit the city today to see the venues where the fab four grew up and played their first concerts. One favourite venue is the cabin club where the Beatles started their career.
There are still many cheap hotels available in Liverpool to book all year round such as the Liverpool marriot which offers luxury accommodation at discount prices. It is also important to remember that when booking a hotel to note the location as a central hotel will often provide much easier access to the local shops, bars and restaurants. Even though a hotel such as the The Sir Thomas Hotel is in the center of Liverpool it is still available at very reasonable rates.
Another Hotel that you may want to look into is the “Hard days night” hotel which is a Beatles inspired hotel. It has several rooms based on members of the band such as the Lennon and McCartney suites. The rooms are all decorated in a modern style but with a 60s Beatles influence which is sure to please the many visitors to the hotel.
Many people also visit Liverpool to see its famous champions league winning football team in action. The team has found alot of success and many new supporters from all around the world in recent years, mainly due to the superb new players added to the team, such as Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres. Also of the citys main hotels will provide access to the Anfield sadium.
