Hotel review - Hard Days Night central Liverpool

October 25th, 2011

So it’s been a while but I thought it was about time I had another cheap hotel review here on the blog, but to keep things interesting I wanted to review quite a quirky hotel. The hotel in question is the Hard day’s night in central Liverpool and as you should be able to tell from the name it’s a Beatles “themed” hotel. The Beatles are probably one of Liverpool’s best exports and millions of tourists flock to the city every year to get a taste of the city that produced them.

First I want to point out that the hotel isn’t just another cheap gimmick as it’s a quality establishment rated at 4 stars by the visit England group. It’s also situated in a great location on North John Street just about half a mile from the official city centre which is great. If you’re a fan of the Beatles you’ll also know that this is the same street as the famous Cavern club, so if you a fan staying in this area really will be the ultimate experience.

As far as amenities go you have all the usual ones you would expect from a quality 4 star hotel like 24 hour front desk, laundry service and wifi. But one of the other main benefits is the great restaurant “Blakes” and also cocktail bar situated right inside the hotel, so if you feel like a drink in a hurry there’s no need to rush out into Liverpool’s “sometimes” cold weather!

Pricewise I’m not sure if many of you would define this as a properly cheap hotel, as rooms are in the £100 per night range. But at the same time if you look at similar hotels in the centre of the city then Hard day’s night is quite good value for money even if it’s not in the true budget range. The only thing is you will have to book ahead as they do get very busy during weekends, which I suppose is the good sign too!

So that’s it for my first hotel review in a while, I hope to do more soon but it’s hard to know what type of accommodation people are looking for as everyone seems to want something different. For me it’s all about writing about hotels that interest me as well as finding cheap deals, when I’m on holiday it’s all part of the experience! Until next time.

Cheap Liverpool guesthouse review

Ok so its about time i had another post here as im sure there are still lots of people looking for great deals for accommodation in Liverpool. I thought i would do another review here of a cheap local place to stay in next time you are in the city. For the review im choosing somewhere i actually stayed in a few months ago when i was over to watch Liverpool VS Lyon in the champion’s league. It was a pretty busy time as alot of people where over for the match as the champions league always brings out a good crowd. Please don’t mention the result as im sure you don’t want to add insult to injury!

Now i have to start by saying i did not stay in a hotel! Now all of you guys who are only looking for cheap hotels in Liverpool do not need to click away as i think this review will be relevant to everyone weather you initially decided on a specific hotel or not. The place i stayed was called Holme Leigh Guest House and it is situated in the Smithdown road area of south Liverpool. I have to be honest that the main reason me and my friends booked this place was the price as it was only £50 for a twin room sharing which i did think was great value for anyone who is on a budget (and me and my friends definitely were!). I actually got a room to myself as my friends had already booked earlier and they had no double rooms left. So my single room was £60 which i think was still ok.

My room was actually quite big to my surprise and i the bathroom was also alot bigger than i would usually expect. Also i have to mention at this time that we where only there for one night so the level of comfort required didn’t need to be out of this world. My friend’s room was actually smaller than mine which was surprising given that it was a double. Also they did not have a bathroom as they did not book an en-suite. This meant trips to the shared showers and toilet which they often decided not to avail of when they could gatecrash my room. The guesthouse also had a reasonable sized breakfast area but i can’t really review this due to the hangover the next day. I would have had neither the stomach nor the motivation to get out of bed between 7 and 8:30 to test it out. I have no idea why many hotels but particularly guesthouses only serve breakfast this early. I have a feeling it is to get away with serving as little people as possible (call me sceptical).

I must confess im not overly familiar with this area of Liverpool and i would not stay it would be a hotspot on your average tourist map. However at the same time it seemed nice enough and the kind of sleepy residential area that you forget about pretty quickly. One of the main things i suppose you are wondering is how much it cost to get back into the city centre by taxi to and from the guesthouse? Well it wasn’t actually that expensive coming in at around £7 a go. Given that we only made this trip a few times a day and that there was 3 of us it wasn’t that expensive at all. Given the extra cost that a hotel right in the centre of Liverpool would have cost us i think it was a good decision to go with this cheaper style of accommodation.

So there you have it my friends, a new post to start the new year in style! Hopefully this will have given you a few more things to think about next time you are booking your trip as there are some real cost savings out there if you are prepared to look around. Stay tuned for some more reviews and news for Liverpool coming soon!

Cheap accommodation review : Sir Thomas Hotel

Its not often we talk about cheap hotels here that are as close to the city centre as the Sir Thomas Hotel in Liverpool city. Its actually only about half a mile from the main amenities which is really good and whats better it is only about £40 per night for a standard twin room which i think represents good value in a budget hotel. This hotel is three star but as i am seeing more and more the standard of your average 3 star hotel has greatly increased over the years. The finish on the rooms and particularly the Bar and restaurant is excellent, it really does come close to several more expensive hotels that ive seen in the city (im not naming names :) )

Only real downside is the car parking but this is something your gonna find with any cheap city centre accommodation. They do provide car parking at the local NCP park but you will have to pay around £12 a day which isnt too bad i suppose. Again the main thing to keep in mind with this hotel is the location as you are going to be able to walk to many of the main attractions and tours straight away as it is located right on Thomas street and so you can save on some expensive taxi fees.
